In spring we love to go visit Silver Lake! The birds are chirping, the lake is calm and quiet, the Bald Eagles are nesting and swooping down for food. There are Blue Heron’s, Beavers, tons of fish to watch through the crystal clear waters, and lots of tadpoles. It’s like a serene little nature paradise. Every spring we head down to Silver Lake to check out the two beaver lodges and look for tadpoles. I did not see any tadpoles yesterday, but this lodge is looking good. We noticed one of the beaver dams has been opened back up, and while we didn’t see any actual beavers, there was evidence that they have been there recently. Maybe we’ll catch a glimpse of them next time. We did see Bald Eagles, and lots of Red Winged Blackbirds!

The Mt. Baker Ski Area is finally ready to open for the season, we are just waiting for the DOT to finish up the last bit of highway repairs before the road is officially opened to the public. While it is currently passable it is “closed” and they are asking everyone to respect the closed signs to the ski area so they can complete the repairs without hindrance. It is estimated the repairs may be completed by tomorrow (Friday) and the ski area will be open Saturday for pass-holder opening day, and Sunday for the general public. With over 50” of snow currently and the snow still coming down and forecasted we should have a decent snowpack for opening day. The short answer is no, there is no lodging up at the Mt. Baker Ski Area. The closest place you can stay is the town of Glacier which is very small. Glacier is about 30 minutes from the ski area. There are only 3 gated communities in the town of Glacier, those are Mt Baker Rim, Snowline, and Snowater (a condo unit community). These three communities hold most of the lodging for the Mt. Baker Ski Area. There are very few other scatters homes nearby that can be rented, and there is a 4th community back down the highway further away called Glacier Springs which can add 15 more minutes to your already early start to get fresh pow, and it has no community snow plowing, so the roads in that community can be treacherous at times.
Snowline, Snowater, and Mt. Baker Rim communities are your closest lodging option for the Mt. Baker Ski Area and the entrances to them all are less than a minute apart. All three communities have on site plowing service, and all of our homes are located in these 3 communities. We also own our own plow and start plowing early each day when there is snow, and we will plow all day long if needed. As long as it’s snowing we keep going.
