Spring is such a beautiful time to visit Mt. Baker! The flowers are starting to bloom, and all the trees, and plants have fresh bright leaves! One of my favorite things about spring in Glacier is how everywhere you look it almost appears to be glowing.

The little spring salamander eggs have hatched. My boys have been enjoying watching them eat. A little interesting fact about salamander babies is that when they first hatch they thrive on the yolk sack for several days, sometimes not eating any real food for about a week.

Once they do start finally eating they rely on the instinct of chasing, and will only eat something  that is moving. It’s fun to watch them as you wiggle a little frozen worm in front of them and they get down and arch their shoulders and then pounce on it like a little kitten in play. It’s also a little difficult to get them to eat the first few times.

After a while they start to rely on their sense of smell for food, and feeding them becomes much easier! At that point you can just leave the food in the tank in a pile and they will flock to it all on their own.

One of my kids favorite things to do in spring is check out all the little ponds in Glacier for salamander, and frog eggs. This year the lower ponds are loaded with salamander egg clusters! It is so fun to watch them grow! One thing that makes salamander eggs particularly fun is that the eggs are clear so you can see the baby inside and watch them change shape and grow gills before hatching. They start out as little round balls and slowly open up and get longer and longer. Eventually their little gills pop out and you can see their defined tails. In the late spring when the snow is melted off, the ponds up around Mt. Baker Ski Area will also fill with salamander eggs. When your up hiking around take a look for a large ball about the size of a grapefruit that looks much like clear jello. They will be floating or attached to sticks in the ponds. But don’t disturb them! They are very fragile! They also camouflage pretty well, so it’s easiest to see them when the sun shines into the water, or if you get down close and look in.

I was able to capture this fat little bee hard at work yesterday. There were probably ten little bees all buzzing around this same cluster of crocus blooms. But this little guy in particular wasn’t hopping from one flower to the next like the others, he was very intent on digging deeper and deeper into the center of this particular flower for quite some time. If you look close you can see the little pieces of pollen stuck all over in his hair.

I saw these little snowdrops next to one of our condos in the Snowater Community yesterday. There are many  little trails that meander through the woods and along the river in Snowater. The spring birds are singing, and the little buds and flowers are popping up all over! Spring is a great time to visit the area for a quick getaway. Snowater has two pools and two hot tubs, as well as community areas with racquetball, a pool table, table tennis, a giant sized walk and play chess board, and much more! There is also a children’s playground outside. It’s a great place to escape with the kids, or to come with adults only and enjoy the peace and quiet of the woods!

The last few days have been warm and sunny! The temperature has been around 70 degrees which is very warm for this time of year! I noticed this little crocus blooming just across the street from me. I love seeing the little signs of spring after a long winter.

The last few weeks here in Glacier, WA,  the weather has brought us well over a foot of snow. The temperatures have dropped into the teens and 20’s many nights which has created beautiful icicles all over. It’s like a little winter wonder land up here right now. I spotted these icicles down on South Pass rd. (Aprx. 15 miles before Glacier)  a few days ago. My kids and I thought they were pretty neat!

The weather has been a bit on the dry and warmer side this winter here in Glacier, WA.

Mt. Baker Ski Area has still had a nice amount of snow, but it has really stayed up in the mountains for the most part. Today it snowed all the way down in Bellingham. Here in Glacier we had several inches of fresh snow! Temperatures are around 20 degrees, and forecasts are calling for the cold to stick around a little longer. Looks like we will be holding on to this snow for a bit! My kids were outside first thing this morning making little snowmen in their pajamas. They couldn’t wait to get their hands on it. We are loving it!
